Kate MacDowell

Kate MacDowell hand-sculpts with porcelain. I find her detail-oriented, impossible natural history style very intriguing. However, upon reading her statement, I was disappointed to hear that her intent is to show man vs nature and the fragility of ecology blah blah blah. Sometimes, its best to trust your own convictions with a piece of work and breach the artist's intent...What do you think?

  1. I look at her website and I really loved 90% of it but then didnt like the others. I think that is because some of her work is open ended, like you said kelley, you naturally create your own ideas about the piece (and those are the ones I liked) . Then the other pieces I didnt like because the message seemed to obvious.
Just like some of her work her artist statement was too imposing. Definitely something I could work on my self! I often feel like I can end up preaching my views through my artwork and that usually goes sour:)
